The Bungalow Market: Where Modern Meets Vintage

What started in 2019 with a booth space in Slate Interiors in Charlotte, has become a dream destination for interior designer Greta McCoy!

She and her husband, Brett, who have lived in the Lake Norman area for almost 20 years, happily found a storefront close to their home in Cornelius, and moved their collections from the booth at the beginning of 2020. Both are now thrilled to be celebrating the third anniversary of The Bungalow Market this month!

Always the girl moving furniture around in her parents’ home, Greta was lucky her family embraced her budding passion for both design and functionality.

“At the age of 16, I ripped up the carpet in my bedroom to expose the hardwood floors, and painted my room a kelly green to contrast with the oak wood flooring,” explains Greta. “I was constantly moving the furniture around to have it make more sense in its space. I’ve always had art and design in my bones, and I pursued my passion with a design degree.”

With a shop inventory that is ever-changing, The Bungalow Market is typically stocked with 50% new items, and 50% vintage treasures. Greta feels that mix is what creates a perfect home: A touch of new, mingled with meaningful keepsakes.

Greta searches high and low for great vintage pieces, and loves the thrill of the hunt!

“Lately, I have had wonderful leads from my customers  – although I am extremely picky on what I take in,” she says. “I love going to small town thrift shops and estate sales, where I can see the possibility of each abandoned piece. My favorite job is choosing the color to lacquer a piece, or the designer fabric to refresh a sofa or chair set.”

Making space for only the most unique items sets The Bungalow Market apart, as does Greta’s keen eye for high-quality pieces. She sources furniture and décor from other countries such as Africa and Indonesia, and proudly showcases finds from local high-end furniture sources.

“Every piece in the store is ready to go home with a lucky new owner,” says Greta. “For those that needed a little extra love, they’ve been restored, refinished, lacquered,  or even re-upholstered with beautiful fabrics.”

While every day is different with what’s in the shop constantly revolving, Greta does latch on to favorite pieces now and then. Currently, she’s enamored with a Vintage Century Furniture staggered shelving unit that’s been professionally lacquered in a rich shade of teal, complete with its original brass hardware.

“I’m also a lover of vintage campaign furniture, usually made by Drexel,” explains Greta. “Those pieces always look so good lacquered in different colors, still sporting their brass hardware.”

You might call The Bungalow Market’s style a little mid-century modern, some industrial, and a bit Bohemian, mixed with vintage furnishings – including lighting and accessories – many sourced right from the heart of High Point. All that wonderful design equals something for every taste in the shop!

“We also carry locally sourced gifts by North Carolina talents, from cute hand screen-printed kitchen towels and cutting boards made in Asheville, to local artists out of nearby Davidson,” tells Greta. “Come support local! We would love to meet you!
