What’s Growing @ the Lake — What You Need to Know About Gardening and Planting Around Lake Norman

by RIDGECREST GARDEN CENTER

Gardening in the Carolinas, particularly in the Lake Norman area, can sometimes be daunting for those accustomed to our compacted clay soil and the unpredictable weather. Additionally, the uncertainty of planting locations and times can be intimidating. However, I am here to assure you that growing plants and nurturing them can be accomplished.

Let’s begin with the fundamentals. Firstly, the Carolina clay soil presents a challenge for plant growth. To optimize its conditions, it is essential to incorporate generous amounts of organic matter such as compost and work them into the top six to 12 inches of the soil. This process enhances drainage and structure. Furthermore, lawn aeration during fall months can further improve soil quality. It is advisable to focus on the entire bedding area rather than just the specific planting hole. By conditioning the entire area, you can ensure healthier plants in the long run. If budget constraints prevent you from conditioning the entire yard, consider focusing on a smaller area by adding a high-quality, ready-to-use soil conditioner. Daddy Pete’s, a natural organic product produced in Stony Point, NC, is an excellent option.

Secondly, it is crucial to determine the planting zone for Lake Norman. As I like to say, we are in zone 7b. This means that when you encounter a plant with a grow tag indicating it thrives in zones five through eight, you can confidently plant it here. However, it is important to note that annuals will perish in the winter and require replanting annually. Perennials, on the other hand, are planted once and provide long term growth. Regardless of the plant category, proper care is essential for their survival. Plants require attention and nurturing, much like babies.

Lastly, take a walk around your yard in the afternoon during the summer to get a true sense of how much sun or shade your yard receives. I always advise people that they know their yard better than just telling me they get sun in the morning at the front of their house. There are many factors that determine whether a hydrangea will thrive in your space based on the amount of sun a specific area of your yard receives at certain times of the day. Do you have areas where water accumulates? Do you have pets that prefer certain areas of the yard? How much time are you willing to dedicate to maintaining your yard? Do I have the space for certain plants? These are all questions you should ask yourself before heading to the Garden Center. Remember, reading the plant label is helpful, but you have to keep in mind that the label just describes what a plant will do in a general climate setting. If you’re not sure, swing by and ask us!
