When Dena Hall relocated from Florida to the Lake Norman area in 2019 to be closer to her children, continuing to enjoy the hobby she knew best was only natural: Sewing. But this time around, it has become more of a career!
From the age of six, when her great-grandmother lovingly began sharing her quilting scraps and gently teaching her some basic sewing skills, Dena had found a passion. She learned to craft pretty doll clothes, then turned to making her own clothes. Once she became a parent, and a stay-at-home-mom for over 18 years, Dena naturally sewed enviable outfits for her children, and the most amazing Halloween costumes in the neighborhood! When she runs into old friends and they ask what she’s doing now – she proudly tells them she’s still sewing – and they always respond with “of course you are!” (Those costumes have not been forgotten!)
Now, Dena Hall Sews has proven to be a much-needed resource in the Denver and Lake Norman areas, and Dena has become known as the master of complicated alterations and sewing repairs with a quick turnaround – for women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing alike. Her flair for meticulous detail and creativity is unmistakable! As a college student, Dena worked for a fine men’s clothing shop, and trained with their tailor and seamstress – so she’s also comfortable with alterations to men’s jackets and suits, which can often be a challenge.
Her lifelong love of sewing also includes expertise in quilting and embroidery work, and she often works closely with interior designers to create custom cushions or pillows for their clients. She can also hem or lengthen draperies and other window treatments.
Thrilled to add the finishing touch to special moments, Dena also specializes in fitting and tailoring for prom dresses, bridal gowns, bridesmaids’ attire, and dresses for mothers of the bride and groom. She recently worked her magic on her own daughter’s wedding gown – a beautiful sleeveless mermaid style with a sweetheart neckline that fit the bride to perfection – once her talented mom had taken in the waistline and did a little hemming of the skirt!
And when it comes to creative costumes, here’s her all-time favorite project.
“We purchased 20 pairs of blue jeans from Goodwill, and I took that pile of denim and created the iconic Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake denim outfits for a client … just in time for a Halloween party!” she says. “I fashioned her gown, and his jacket and hat.” A true masterpiece!
