Between them, owners Courtney Brownewell and Susan Williams have over 20 years experience in retail, and both are well-versed in creating inviting spaces. The two entrepreneurs — who both started showing at craft shows, but in different mediums — met at a local multi-vendor market, where each had a booth.
“We both had a desire to grow in the retail field, and starting our own business was the next step,” says Courtney and Susan. “We were not looking specifically in Mooresville, but a friend mentioned the space at Merino Mill, and we fell in love with its tall ceilings, amazing light, exposed brick walls, and original wood floors!”
Customers also love hearing about the mill’s history, as well as telling Courtney and Susan about their family members who worked there through the years. Opening in March of 2021 was still slightly scary — post-pandemic — but a year after opening, Nest & Bower was awarded the Lake Norman “Normy” award for Best Furniture Store! But this adorable space is filled with so much more, including the most unique home accents, dinnerware, bar accessories, gourmet foods, garden decor, and jewelry.
Nest & Bower carries both popular and one-of-a-kind brands — a “collected” look with some new merchandise, mixed with a bit of vintage, all with its own character and style.
“We spend lots of time curating and staging the store, and creating a beautiful, warm, and inviting space for our customers,” says Susan. “It’s a pleasure to help people select the perfect accessory for their home, and we love getting to know them and learning about their lives and interests.”
“We can honestly say the most rewarding part of our business is getting to know our customers,” agrees Courtney. “Every time someone walks through our doors, we make it our mission to make them feel comfortable exploring our unique collection of gifts and home decor.”
The ladies at Nest & Bower also love assisting customers find perfect gifts for friends and family — including new babies and even the man in your life! — creating a true shopping experience where it’s not just about the purchase. You’ll need several trips around the store to grasp the possibilities on any given shopping day. Courtney and Susan are passionate about the esthetics of the showroom floor — from product selection to the music playlist!
“Many customers come in and say our store is their happy place!” says Courtney. With currently one other employee, the savvy owners are planning to expand a little more this coming year.
“Even as we grow, one of us is almost always at the store because we feel it’s important to stay connected to our customers — and the daily aspects of running the business,” says Susan.
Fun — and creative! — monthly painting classes have also become popular events at Nest & Bower. Participants bring food, drinks, and enjoy a night out with friends, and the chance to create an art piece that’s easy enough for beginners.
