Open since June 1, 2020, Novel Taproom is situated in a classic old building that originally housed a livery stable and blacksmith shop dating back to the 1870s. Novel owners Jeff and Sandy Allen focused simply on getting the indoor space renovated so they could open as soon as possible, but then COVID hit and turned things upside down. Post-lockdown, Novel Taproom opened to rave reviews and was an immediate hit — not only in Newton and Catawba County— but in many of the surrounding communities, and even statewide!
This unique venue draws large crowds for regular festive activities such as Trivia Night, Music Bingo, and Bunco, with exciting attention to detail that makes each event memorable. But what really shines at Novel Taproom is their dedication to live music! A huge drawing card and fan favorite, Jeff keeps bands booked about 12 months out. Now, with its stellar reputation as a great small live music venue that just happens to offer an amazing craft beer and wine selection, music has definitely put them on the map!
Fans are pouring in from all across the state, and Jeff notes Novel Taproom is bursting at the seams on weekends. But a new festive look was unveiled in April!
The next phase of growth is the addition of an outdoor entertainment space, including a huge elevated deck, with seating also available below. Guests will find a walk-up bar with an additional 12 taps of craft beer, giving Novel a total of 42 beer taps to go with their robust wine selection.
To accompany the outdoor seating, look for an impressive outdoor stage! Outdoor concerts will allow Novel to better accommodate large crowds — a good problem to have! —and Jeff is working with the City of Newton to close a block of the street beside the taproom to allow for even bigger gatherings on special concert nights. (That street is also included in the Social District.)
Jeff orchestrates a lively and diverse musical lineup that appeals to a wide range of tastes: plenty of classic rock, 90s rock, country, outlaw country, blues, and bluegrass. And as their business and loyal fan base continue to grow, Jeff says he is looking to expand to the Sherrills Ford area, and would absolutely love to have a location in downtown Hickory!
