The View from the Lake

Barbara Norman

Originally from Indiana, Denver resident Barbara Norman is the very definition of keeping busy! From her position as Managing Member at LKN Insurance Services LLC to her more creative outlet at LKN Print and Frame (she’s the finest at custom framing for your family treasures!), she’s a master of details, loves home improvement and construction projects, and most of all, keeping up with her many friends around the Lake Norman community. “I’ve lived in the Lake Norman area for 37 years,” says Barbara, pointing out her genuine love for the lake and the people who live here. Her favorite pastimes? Boating and floating! She also has a passion for puzzles, and of course, her two furry family members – Yorkies named Lake Norman and Bently. Whenever she meets new folks, she shares that Lake Norman is a great place to raise a family, with friendly people and wonderful weather! Once she finally decides to retire, Barbara hopes to travel more – but here at the Lake will always be home. Stop by LKN Print and Frame at 4688 Mountain Creek Avenue, Suite 102, in Denver, 980-222-7123.

Ewa Powell

If you’ve shopped at the very unique and truly “green” Modern Fabrics store in Huntersville, you’ve met Ewa Powell and witnessed her spirited personality! Although she’s lived in the Lake Norman area for 20 years, Ewa was born in Warsaw, Poland (yes, surviving the Chernobyl nuclear explosion), attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland, and later, the University of Illinois in Chicago. She’s also saved 100,000-plus yards of fabric from going to the landfill every year. “I just saved 1,439 yards before breakfast this morning,” she laughs. With every purchase of discounted designer textiles at Modern Fabrics, customers join Ewa and her husband, James, and their fabric “reclaiming” efforts, geared towards reducing waste. From the finest luxury furniture companies in the United States, these reclaimed fabrics are remnants that would otherwise be discarded. For savvy customers, that means the chance to purchase the best designer drapery and upholstery fabrics that have been quietly rescued from cutting room floors – at 50-75% off their list price. Far better than sending those remnants to the landfill! The store manager, Debra, has a keen knowledge of fabrics, warmly greets customers, and keeps the store running smoothly during the week, while Ewa sources fabrics for the online shop, as well as for the Huntersville store. Ewa will tell you in a heartbeat she absolutely loves finding beautiful pieces of fabric, often in the most obscure locations, all over North Carolina. “I travel far and wide to source the fabrics you find at our store, and each bolt has a unique story of where I found it,” smiles Ewa. “But don’t ask me – because it’s a secret!” Ewa is most in her element being surrounded by nature, or hiking, yet so close to creature comforts. “My favorite time is going out on the lake with family and friends and having the best time every time, without having to plan a thing! “If you don’t fall in love with NC from the lake here, you probably don’t have a heart!” Ewa also loves that throughout the entire Lake Norman area, small business still feels small. “Everyone is friendly, takes their time, and is willing just to sit down for a chat,” she adds. Learn more about the passion behind Modern Fabrics by emailing ewa@modern-fabrics.com, or stop by the store at 15435 NC-73, in Huntersville, 704-740-9676.
