Celebrating 36 years of amazing live theatre, The Green Room Community Theatre in Newton, NC, is a creative non-profit group with Academy Award-worthy goals.

That’s an impressive trio of opportunities for families, who can experience the exciting world of the performing arts together.
“We believe exposure to live theatre is a life-transforming experience, and we seek to provide diverse quality programming to the community at a reasonable cost,” says Cathy Banner, Executive Director. With seven Main Stage productions and two smaller Black Box Theatre productions each season, families can fully engage in the many perks of having live theatre in their community and enjoy the fun of participating in play productions together.
The Main Stage productions include one all-youth show, and at least one family show with roles available for all ages! Non-traditional, diverse casting is also encouraged in all theatre productions, and each of those presentations takes place at the group’s state-of-the-art facilities at the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton. While collaborating with the City of Newton, the Green Room Theatre also presents Shakespeare in the Park in the late summer or early fall, and hosts a variety of “field trip” opportunities for children during the school year.
Then there’s education – where The Green Room also stands above the crowd! The group offers weekly after-school acting classes for grades K-12 each semester, featuring a variety of topics. “Sprouts” is a program designed for preschoolers ages three to five, and the class line-up also includes “Limitless Theatre for Exceptional Actors” for young adults with special needs. For summertime fun – and learning! – there are week-long summer Shakespeare drama camps for youth, and last August, the group held its first-ever Musical Theatre camp. With heartfelt thanks to a grant from the United Arts Council of Catawba County, another series of classes and workshops for adults will take place during the current season. Among those will be a special effects makeup workshop, and an improv and comedic timing workshop. So, moms and dads, time to revisit those acting dreams!
As part of The Green Room, a troupe of adult actors known as The Green Bean Players presents classic fairy tales, folk stories, and fables, perfect for ages kindergarten through sixth grade, and they tour each summer throughout Catawba county and the surrounding areas. Over the past 20 years, these productions, as well as several other shows each season, have been offered to area students as school field trips. The troupe is thrilled to provide this opportunity to attend live theatre to so many local children who might not otherwise have that experience.
For the 2021-2022 season, total participation among all the exceptional programs of The Green Room surpassed 28,000, and all signs point to 2023 being their busiest and most successful performing season yet!
