In the short – but exciting – eight months they’ve been open in Sherrills Ford, Mary and Doug Harrington believe they have created the perfect niche for their charming shop with its equally charming name – The Turtle’s Shell.
“We set out for the store to be focused on home décor, art and gifts,” shares Mary, who loves being part of the small business community here. “Then, based on the lack of what we found available in the Sherrills Ford area, we decided to also offer women’s, infants’ and toddlers’ clothing. Providing options for women of all ages is important to us, from colorful, easy-to-wear dresses, blouses, casual wear and jeans, to beach cover-ups, accent jewelry, purses, wallets and other cute, irresistible accessories!”
That pivot moment – deciding to broaden their inventory a bit – was based on the amazing time they’ve had getting to know new friends and neighbors in the area since opening as well as honestly listening to what those shoppers want and need to be able to find locally. The shop’s fun ambiance and constantly fresh inventory has been welcomed with open arms – and a steadily growing base of loyal fans!
Always known as the friend who can add the perfect finishing touch to a room or party setting, Mary’s knack for finding the “little things” that bring a room to life has played a huge role in designing the business.
“On the home décor side, we look to have those accessory items that can help anyone freshen up the look of their home, be it wall art, clever knick-knacks, unique lighting, kitchenware and some very unique, one-of-a-kind products,” adds Mary.
The Turtle’s Shell has also evolved into everyone’s favorite “gift shop” – for birthdays (both youth and adults), new homes, weddings and every traditional spring and summer holiday.
“We have fun options coming in now for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, including Mom & Dad mugs, specialty candles and pretty flower vases,” Mary shares. The shop also carries popular hosting items such as colorful platters and wine glasses, perfect for a wedding brunch or bridesmaid’s gift, or cute frames and decorative pillows for the bride and groom’s new home.
Moving into summer, you’ll find patriotic-themed gift ideas for Memorial Day and July 4th, including clothing, kids’ wear and seasonal home décor for your lake house.
“We’ve purposely embraced the ‘Lake Life’ and our pride in Sherrills Ford with unique Lake Norman tees and sweatshirts, towels, glassware and LKN coasters. Lake and boating necessities are always in plentiful supply – tote bags, cooler bags, blankets, wind chimes, beautiful stained glass and lake-themed kitchen and outdoor entertaining essentials,” she adds.
